How much graded Chinese reading exists per HSK level?

We analyzed all 149 chapters of 16 graded novels on HSKNovels — 242,961 characters of graded reading — and measured how much reading volume exists at each HSK 3.0 vocabulary band. This is the first public dataset of its kind for the HSK 3-5 graded novel space.

Reading volume by HSK band

HSK 3643 chars · 1 chapters
HSK 4-57,344 chars · 77 chapters
HSK 4+39,689 chars · 48 chapters
HSK 5-94,340 chars · 91 chapters
HSK 5+50,945 chars · 53 chapters

Note: chapters are written in multiple level versions, so the same chapter can contribute to several bands. HSK 5- holds the largest volume (94,340 chars), reflecting the longer reading stamina required at upper-intermediate level.

Methodology

Data source: the full text of 149 chapter files (JSON) from 16 graded novels published on HSKNovels. Each chapter stores a word count per HSK level version (HSK 3 / HSK 4- / HSK 4+ / HSK 5- / HSK 5+).

Band definition: level labels follow the HSK 3.0 vocabulary system — HSK 3 targets the ~1,500-word band, HSK 4- the 2,000-word band, HSK 4+ the 2,800-word band, and HSK 5- the 3,600-word band.

Limitations: character count (汉字数) is used as the volume metric rather than unique vocabulary tokens; coverage per HSK word list is estimated from level labels, not from per-word list matching. We treat this as a reading-volume dataset rather than a strict vocabulary-coverage measurement.

What this means for learners

HSK 4- learners have about 57,000 characters of graded reading available — enough for roughly 3 full novels. This is a realistic volume target: reading one novel per month keeps vocabulary in context and builds the stamina HSK 4 reading passages demand.

HSK 5- learners have the largest pool (94,000+ characters), because upper-intermediate reading needs the most practice. This is the level where reading speed and inference skills start to matter more than new vocabulary.
