Our grading starts from the HSK 3.0 vocabulary system. To make the jump between long-form chapters feel smoother, HSK 4 and HSK 5 are each split into two reading bands.
These vocabulary targets keep the public level labels simple while giving learners smaller steps through the hardest intermediate jump.
How we write, grade, and review every story.
Write for the level
Each chapter is drafted in modern simplified Chinese against a target HSK band. Vocabulary outside the band is intentionally limited, so the story stays readable without a dictionary on every line.
Grade against HSK 3.0
Drafts are checked against the HSK 3.0 vocabulary system. Sentences and word choices that would push the text out of its declared level are rewritten, keeping the language inside the published band.
Review and support
Every chapter is copyedited for learner experience, then produced with pinyin, an English translation, and native-speaker audio. Corrections from reader feedback are folded back into the text.
Vocabulary coverage method
Level labels follow the HSK 3.0 vocabulary system: HSK 3 targets roughly the 1,500-word band, HSK 4- the 2,000-word band, HSK 4+ the 2,800-word band, and HSK 5- the 3,600-word band. Words outside the target band appear sparingly and are always supported by pinyin or an inline gloss, so readers meet comprehensible input instead of a vocabulary wall. This is the same principle behind graded-reader research: reading stays fluent when most words are already known, and the few new ones are learned in context.
