A rainy night on an old city street. Xiaohuang is a half-grown stray cat with no food, no dry place to sleep, and a cardboard box the wind has already knocked over. Then a door opens, and a stranger holds out half a steamed bun. From that doorway the cat slowly becomes part of a street — a wall, a breakfast shop, a little girl named Doudou, a dog that chases it, snow, a fever, and finally a name of its own.
