中国统一的起点:秦朝的故事
The Starting Point of China's Unification: The Story of the Qin Dynasty
HSK4+历史
More than two thousand years ago, China was not yet a unified country.
At that time, there were many states. For land, population, and power, they often fought wars. The common people worried every day about one thing: when would war arrive at their doorstep.
Later, a state that was originally not particularly powerful slowly changed the whole of China.
This state was the Qin state.
The Qin dynasty also became the first unified dynasty in China.
Although it lasted only fifteen years, it deeply influenced the subsequent two thousand years.
I. Before the Qin Dynasty: China Was Very Chaotic
Before the Qin dynasty, China entered a long period of division. At that time, there were many states, which history calls the 'Seven Warring States'. These states fought wars every day. Today you attack me, tomorrow I attack you. A city might belong to Zhao in the morning and become Wei by evening. The life of ordinary people was very hard. Many young men were sent to the battlefield, and many families were separated by war. Everyone wanted to ask: 'When will it become peaceful?'
II. The Qin State Begins to Change
At first, the Qin state was not the most powerful. Many states even looked down on it, thinking it was remote and poor. But later, an important person changed the Qin state. This person was Shang Yang. After Shang Yang came to Qin, he began to implement reforms. History calls this the 'Shang Yang Reforms'. Shang Yang believed: 'If a state wants to become strong, it must change old methods.' Therefore, he did many bold things. Many people disliked Shang Yang because his laws were too strict. However, these reforms truly made Qin stronger and stronger. Later, Qin's army became very formidable, and the economy improved. Other states began to gradually fear Qin.
III. The Qin State Eliminates the Six States
After Qin became powerful, it began to expand outward. At that time, Qin had a young king. His name was Ying Zheng. Ying Zheng experienced many dangers from childhood, so his character was very determined. He had a great goal: to unify the world. Therefore, Qin began to attack the other states one by one. After many years of war, all six states were finally eliminated by Qin. China was truly unified for the first time. That year was 221 BC.
IV. The First Emperor of China Appears
After unifying the world, Ying Zheng thought: 'I am no longer an ordinary king.' Therefore, he gave himself a new title: 'Emperor'. He also became the first emperor in Chinese history. Later generations call him: Qin Shi Huang. Qin Shi Huang believed that a unified country must have a unified management method. So he began to carry out many important reforms.
V. The Unification Measures of the Qin Dynasty
Qin Shi Huang did many great things that influenced later generations. 1. Standardized writing: In the past, different states wrote characters in different ways. Sometimes, for the same character, everyone wrote it completely differently. After unification, the Qin dynasty began to use standardized writing. In this way, people from different places could understand official content. 2. Standardized currency: In the past, the money of each state looked different. Doing business was very troublesome. After the Qin unification, the whole country began to use the same coinage. Merchants found it much more convenient to do business. 3. Standardized roads: The Qin dynasty built many roads. In this way, armies and merchants could move faster. Connections between different regions became stronger. 4. Built the Great Wall: To prevent northern nomadic peoples from attacking, the Qin dynasty also built the Great Wall. Many people participated in this work.
VI. Why Did the Qin Dynasty Quickly Perish?
Although the Qin dynasty completed unification, its problems also increased. First, the Qin laws were too strict. Second, the state built many large constructions. The people were forced to work and their lives became increasingly hard. Later, rebellions began to appear in many places. At that moment, Qin Shi Huang died. The internal situation of the Qin dynasty also became chaotic. Finally, uprisings became increasingly serious. In 206 BC, the Qin dynasty fell. From establishment to fall, it was only fifteen years.
VII. Why Was the Qin Dynasty Important?
Although the Qin dynasty existed for a very short time, it changed Chinese history. Because starting from the Qin dynasty, China became a truly unified country for the first time. Many later systems were also influenced by the Qin dynasty. Although the Qin was short-lived, it is one of the most important dynasties in Chinese history. Qin Shi Huang thus became one of the most influential figures in Chinese history.
