Chapter 8
Buddha returned to the Western Heaven and told his disciples an idea.
He wanted to find a good monk from the Eastern Land of Tang.
This monk would go to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures and help people do good deeds.
Guanyin Bodhisattva heard this and said, "Let me handle this matter."
Buddha agreed.
He gave Guanyin Bodhisattva a kasaya and a tin staff.
Buddha said, "Give these two treasures to the scripture seeker."
Buddha also said that if they encounter capable monsters on the way, they can be taught to improve and later protect the scripture seeker.
Guanyin Bodhisattva and her disciple Huian Traveler set off.
When they flew over the Flowing Sand River, a monster jumped out of the river.
The monster wielded a treasure staff and struck at Huian the Traveler.
The two fought for a while.
The monster saw Guanyin Bodhisattva and immediately knelt on the ground to kowtow.
Originally, this monster was previously the Curtain-Raising General in heaven.
Because he broke a crystal cup at the Peach Banquet, the Jade Emperor was very angry and banished him to the Flowing Sands River.
Guanyin Bodhisattva asked him: "Are you willing to reform and protect the scripture-seeker in the future?"
The monster said: "I am willing."
Guanyin Bodhisattva gave him a name, called Sha Wujing, and had him wait at the Flowing Sands River.
They continued walking.
When passing by a mountain, a pig monster ran out from the mountain.
The pig demon held a rake and attacked Hui'an the Traveler.
The two fought for a while.
The pig demon saw Guanyin Bodhisattva and also knelt down to kowtow.
The pig demon said that he used to be Marshal Tianpeng.
Because he got drunk and harassed the fairy Chang'e.
The Jade Emperor was very angry, beat him, and banished him to the mortal world.
When he was reincarnated, he turned into the appearance of a pig.
Guanyin Bodhisattva also advised him to learn to be good.
The pig demon agreed.
Guanyin Bodhisattva gave him a name, called Zhu Wuneng, and told him to wait in this mountain.
They walked for a while longer and heard someone shouting for help in the air.
Looking up, they saw a little white dragon hanging in mid-air.
The little white dragon said he was the third prince of the West Sea Dragon King.
Because he accidentally burned a precious pearl, the Jade Emperor wanted to kill him.
He asked Guanyin Bodhisattva to save him, saying he was willing to reform and carry the scripture pilgrim to the Western Heaven in the future.
Guanyin Bodhisattva flew to the Heavenly Court to meet the Jade Emperor.
The Jade Emperor pardoned the little white dragon from the death penalty.
Guanyin Bodhisattva sent the little white dragon to Eagle Sorrow Stream and had him wait there.
They arrived at the foot of the Five Elements Mountain.
Sun Wukong was trapped under this mountain.
Guanyin Bodhisattva told Sun Wukong about the journey to fetch the scriptures.
She asked: Are you willing to protect the scripture-fetcher and make up for your mistakes?
Sun Wukong had already been crushed for over five hundred years.
He immediately said: I am willing.
I am willing.
Guanyin Bodhisattva told him to wait patiently, and the scripture-fetcher would come to save him.
Finally, they arrived at the capital of the Great Tang, Chang'an.
They transformed into two monks, entered the city, and stayed in a Tudigong temple.
The immortals of Chang'an heard that Guanyin Bodhisattva had arrived, and they all came to the temple to pay respects.
