Chapter 8
Buddha returned to the Western Heaven and said to his disciples that he wanted to find a sincere monk from the Eastern Land of Tang.
This monk must experience many difficulties, come to the Western Heaven, retrieve the true scriptures, and help people towards goodness.
Guanyin Bodhisattva listened and actively requested to do this task.
Buddha agreed.
He gave Guanyin Bodhisattva a brocade kasaya and a nine-ringed tin staff.
Buddha said to give these two treasures to the future scripture seeker.
Buddha also told Guanyin Bodhisattva that if she encounters capable demons on the way, she can persuade them to learn good and join Buddhism.
Later, let them become disciples of the scripture seeker and protect the scripture seeker to go to the Western Heaven.
Guanyin Bodhisattva, with her disciple Hui'an Traveler, took the treasures and set off.
When they flew over the Flowing Sands River, a very fierce-looking demon suddenly jumped out of the river.
The monster, holding a treasure staff in its hand, attacked Hui'an Walker.
The two fought for a while.
The monster saw Guanyin Bodhisattva nearby, immediately put away its weapon, knelt on the ground, and kowtowed.
Originally, this monster was the Curtain-Rolling General in heaven.
Because he accidentally broke a glass cup at the Peach Banquet, the Jade Emperor was very angry, expelled him to the mortal world, and he turned into a monster in the Flowing Sands River.
Guanyin Bodhisattva asked him if he was willing to learn to be good, join Buddhism, and protect the scripture seeker on the journey to the Western Heaven to obtain scriptures in the future.
The monster immediately agreed.
Guanyin Bodhisattva held a ceremony for him, gave him a Buddhist name, called Sha Wujing.
Guanyin Bodhisattva told him to wait peacefully in the Flowing Sands River for the scripture seeker to pass by.
Guanyin Bodhisattva and Hui'an Walker continued to walk eastward.
When they passed by a high mountain, a pig demon with a long snout and big ears suddenly ran out from the mountain.
The pig demon swung a rake and attacked the traveler Hui'an.
The two fought for several rounds.
When the pig demon saw Guanyin Bodhisattva, he quickly dropped the rake and knelt down to kowtow.
The pig demon said that he used to be the Marshal Tianpeng in charge of the Heavenly River.
Because he got drunk, behaved inappropriately, and harassed the fairy Chang'e of the Moon Palace.
The Jade Emperor found out and was very angry, struck him two thousand times with a hammer, and then banished him to the mortal world.
He made a mistake during his reincarnation and turned into the appearance of a pig.
Guanyin Bodhisattva also advised him to reform, learn good behavior, and protect the scripture seeker in the future.
The pig demon readily agreed.
Guanyin Bodhisattva also held a ceremony for him and gave him a Buddhist name, called Zhu Wuneng.
Guanyin Bodhisattva told him to wait in this mountain.
After bidding farewell to Zhu Wuneng, Guanyin Bodhisattva and Huian the Traveler had not gone far when suddenly they heard someone in the air shouting for help.
They looked up and saw a little white dragon hanging in mid-air, being punished.
Guanyin Bodhisattva asked him what had happened.
The little white dragon said that he is the third prince of the Dragon King of the Western Sea.
Because he was careless, he set fire and burned a precious pearl in the palace, violating heavenly laws.
The Jade Emperor ordered him to be hung here, and in a few days, he would be executed.
The little white dragon begged Guanyin Bodhisattva to save him.
He said that he is willing to improve himself, join the Buddhist order, and in the future carry the scripture seeker to the Western Heaven.
Guanyin Bodhisattva then flew to the Heavenly Court to see the Jade Emperor and plead for the little white dragon.
The Jade Emperor, considering Guanyin Bodhisattva's face, pardoned the little white dragon's death penalty.
Guanyin Bodhisattva sent the little white dragon to Eagle Sorrow Gorge and let him wait there for the scripture seeker.
The master and disciple continued their journey and arrived at the foot of Five Elements Mountain.
Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equaling Heaven who once wreaked havoc in the Heavenly Palace, was crushed under this mountain.
Guanyin Bodhisattva told Sun Wukong about the scripture-seeking mission.
She asked Sun Wukong if he was willing to protect the scripture seeker and use this merit to make up for his past mistakes.
Sun Wukong had already been crushed under the mountain for over five hundred years.
He day and night hoped to be able to come out.
After hearing Guanyin Bodhisattva's words, Sun Wukong immediately nodded incessantly, saying he was very willing.
Guanyin Bodhisattva instructed him to wait patiently, and when the time comes, there will naturally be a scripture-seeking person to rescue him out.
Finally, Guanyin Bodhisattva and Hui'an the Traveler arrived at the capital city of the Great Tang, Chang'an.
They transformed into the appearance of two wandering monks and entered the city.
They temporarily stayed in a local earth god temple.
The mountain gods, earth gods, and other deities from Chang'an city and surrounding areas, hearing that Guanyin Bodhisattva had arrived, all came to the temple one after another to pay respects to Guanyin Bodhisattva.
