Nüwa Mends the Sky

After there were humans on the earth, days became lively one by one.

In the morning, people walked to the river to fetch water. At noon, they searched for fruits in the forest. In the evening, they rested under trees, listening to the wind blowing over the grassland.

Days passed calmly like this, day after day.

Suddenly, a loud sound came from the sky.

People looked up and saw that the sky had a big hole. Dark clouds pressed down from the hole, and a strong wind rolled down with rain.

The earth began to shake. Rocks on the mountain started to roll down, and the river rose. Houses were flooded, and women holding children didn't know where to go.

Nüwa saw people standing in the water, fear on their faces.

Nüwa felt very sad. She knew that if the sky remained broken, people could not live well.

She made a decision: 'I will mend the sky.'

Nüwa first went to find stones. She walked through mountain paths, passed by riversides, and also walked through the forest that the wind had blown down. She searched for a long time and finally found several stones of different colors.

There were red, yellow, and cyan ones. She put these stones together and slowly burned them with a big fire.

The fire burned for a long time. The stones gradually became bright.

She took the glowing stones and flew toward the sky.

The wind was strong, and the rain was heavy. Her clothes were blown by the wind, but the stones in her hands did not fall.

She came to the place where the sky was broken and put the glowing stones on it one by one. The hole was big, so she mended it piece by piece.

The people below all looked up at her.

People stopped crying. 'Nüwa is helping us.' The children also hid behind adults, watching the light in the sky.

Nüwa mended for a long time. Her hands were tired, and her eyes hurt from the wind. But she did not stop.

Finally, the big hole in the sky slowly closed.

The dark clouds dispersed, and the rain subsided. The wind was no longer so fierce. After a while, a beam of bright light shone down from behind the clouds.

When people saw the sunlight, they all breathed a sigh of relief.

退

The river slowly receded, and the earth became quiet. People began to repair the houses knocked down by the water and clear the fallen trees.

Nüwa returned to the earth from the sky.

She looked at the mountains and rivers that had become quiet again, and sat gently on a stone. She was very tired, but seeing people safe, she felt it was worth it.

From then on, people began to commemorate Goddess Nüwa.

She not only created humans, but also protected these lives.
