Chapter 9: Chinese in the Class Group
After Marco came back, he felt very capable.
But in the evening, he encountered something more difficult: checking the class group.
The WeChat group of Class 1-3 was usually quiet. But at 8 p.m. that day, Xiaoyu sent a message:
"Cultural Festival poster group, online discussion tonight. Please reply 1 if received."
Marco understood "Cultural Festival" and "poster." But the last sentence stopped him.
Please reply 1 if received.
Why reply with the number one?
While he was thinking, the group had already started.
Lin Hao: 1
Xiaoyu: 1
Wang Ming: 1
...
A dozen people quickly all sent "1." The phone kept ringing like a little alarm clock.
Marco didn't want to fall behind. He thought for a moment and seriously typed:
"I received one."
After the message was sent, the group was silent for two seconds.
Then Lin Hao sent several "hahahaha."
Wang Ming sent a sticker. The sticker showed a person laughing with hands covering their face.
Marco looked at his phone and felt something was wrong.
Xiaoyu quickly private messaged him:
"Don't worry. Replying 1 means 'I saw the message.' You said 'I received one,' everyone thought it was cute."
Marco breathed a sigh of relief.
He sent again in the group:
"1. I just sent the wrong thing."
Lin Hao immediately said: "It's fine, yours is more advanced than 1."
Xiaoyu sent a smiley face, then began assigning tasks.
"Marco is responsible for introducing Italy. Lin Hao for taking photos. Li Jia for writing the title. Tomorrow afternoon everyone bring materials to the classroom."
Marco read very slowly. He read character by character, finally understanding his task.
He was about to reply "OK," when a small red square suddenly popped up in the group.
It said: Congratulations and best wishes.
Marco was startled.
He opened it and found it was a red packet from Xiaoyu. Below was another sentence:
"Whoever grabs the most will be responsible for the first presentation tomorrow."
The group immediately became lively.
Lin Hao: I'm coming!
Wang Ming: Hand speed, hand speed!
Li Jia: Ahhh I only got two cents!
Marco didn't understand "grab." Aren't red packets gifts? Why grab?
He typed in the group:
"I want to grab too."
Lin Hao quickly sent a voice message: "Don't type, tap the red packet! Hurry!"
Marco quickly tapped the small red square. A number popped up on the phone:
0.03 yuan.
Three cents.
He looked at the number, not knowing if he had won or lost.
Someone in the group sent: "Hahaha, Marco three cents!"
Marco asked: "Can three cents also make you happy?"
Lin Hao said: "Of course. The important thing about grabbing red packets is not the money, but playing together."
Xiaoyu also said: "And you're not the one with the most, so you don't have to go first on stage."
Marco immediately felt that three cents was also good.
He wanted to reply with a sticker, but he had very few stickers, only a few system smileys. He tapped the most ordinary smiley and sent it.
The group went quiet again for a moment.
Wang Ming said: "This smiley looks a bit like a teacher."
Lin Hao said: "Marco, you need some young people's stickers."
Marco felt a bit embarrassed. "Do smileys have an age too?"
Xiaoyu sent a new sticker. It showed a person raising a hand, with text: Received!
"You can use this for now," Xiaoyu said, "It's more natural than your smiley."
Marco saved the sticker. He felt this was more important than learning a new word.
The next morning, Teacher Chen asked in the international department: "How is the poster group going?"
Marco thought for a moment and said: "I learned to reply 1, and also learned to grab three cents."
Teacher Chen was taken aback.
Lin Hao was nearby. "Teacher, he officially entered class group life yesterday."
Teacher Chen thought, I see. "That's great. Chinese is not only in books, but also in groups."
Marco understood this sentence.
In the evening, someone in the group sent: "Tomorrow at 3 p.m., poster group meet in the classroom. Please reply if received."
This time, Marco was not nervous.
He first sent a "1", then sent the sticker Xiaoyu gave him:
Received!
No one in the group laughed at him.
Lin Hao only replied with one sentence:
"Not bad, more and more like a member of our class."
Marco looked at this sentence and felt bright inside.
So learning to communicate with a phone is also a very important lesson.
